We pay particular attention to the quality and freshness of the flowers at Rae's Florist. It is important to remember that flowers are a perishable, natural product and will react immediately to their environment. With every delivery of flowers we provide instructions on how to care for them to prolong their life. A little extra care can make a big difference to any flower arrangement or bouquet. Here are a few tips for caring for your flowers.
For cut flowers and bouquets, trim around 2cm from the stems on an angle prior to placing in clean water. Check the water daily and top up when necessary, re-cut stems every few days. If the water becomes cloudy replace with fresh water.
While there are many home recipes and folklore about using common household products to extend the life of your flowers, like many things this is best left to the professionals. Commercial 'flower food' is scientifically developed and a carefully balanced mixture and should be used if provided with your flowers.
If your flowers are pre-arranged in florists foam top up with clean water daily, taking care not to overfill the container.
Flowers should be positioned away from draughts and direct heat. As some flowers last longer than others, carefully remove any spent blooms to help prolong the life of remaining flowers.
Note regarding pollen staining: We suggest removing pollen from within lilies as they open to prevent the staining of clothing, furniture and carpet. This can be done gently with a tissue. Should your clothing become stained dab the pollen with adhesive tape, do not rub it in to the fabric.
